Voice Thread: Homework, A Necessary Evil?

  1. Hi Nadia.

What a great topic of conversation among educators! You were definitely right about the subject of homework raising a lot of questions. At my high school, this year we incorporated a 9th grade academy. In the 9th grade academy, students attend eight classes a day. Not surprisingly, the issue of homework, quizzes, and tests became a huge issue. A schedule had to be worked out so our students were n ot stuck with four hours of homework every night, or four major assessments on one day. Even with the schedule, some teachers were unhappy. I know that some teachers like homework, some dislike it, some grade it fully, and some give students credit for just attempting the problems. Where do you stand on the subject of homework? Personally, I usually only give homework Monday through Wednesday; and, Thursday night my students' homework is to study for their test on Friday. With my homework assignments I grade select problems as right or wrong, and, then give the students credit for attempting the others, even if they are incorrect.

Another question, how do you like Voice Threads? Do you think they are good Social Learning Theory tools?

    Again, great voice thread topic!

  2. Hi Nadia - I like the topic you chose, and I think it's definitely a topic that teachers & schools should work together on. I'm pretty happy with the homework guidelines that our district has put into place - especially as a parent to 4 boys! I know that a number of years back there was a committee of both parents and teachers to come up with some guidelines for the well-being of our students. Is this a topic of conversation in your school or district? I think it's important to take into consideration many extra-curricular activities that students are involved in (church, music, dance, sports) and also protect the ever shrinking, but important "family" time. Great voicethread to get some good conversations going among educators!
